Project Description

By contrasting warm and luxurious wood with an old stone wall, a 100-year-old barn got a brand new life as a secondary dwelling. In the process, the old structure was celebrated. “Luxe lodge” style that’s deftly done, agreed the 2013 Watermark Awards judges, who awarded the Crystal Springs Barn kitchen a Grand Award. “The materials sing,” said one judge of the mix of stone, reclaimed Douglas fir, level 5 drywall, concrete, and Caesarstone. The palette employs a deft blend of old and new, rustic and sophisticated.
The home’s first-floor footprint is just 588 square feet, so the challenge was utilizing the space to create a functional and efficient kitchen that opened to the dining and living area, as well as to the views beyond. The original 3-foot-thick stacked stone walls were kept as is, exposed on both the interior and exterior of the barn. Structural posts were added on the interior so that the second floor floats above the walls.
