Columbia Forest Products, a Portland, Ore.–based company, recently announced that it will no longer use urea formaldehyde in its plywood production. This type of formaldehyde is widely used in plywood, but the International Agency for Research on Cancer recently classified it as “carcinogenic to humans.” Columbia will now be using a more environmentally friendly soy-based adhesive developed by Hercules Inc. and Oregon State University.
