Custom builder Alex Hannigan has been installing concrete roof tiles made by Monier Lifetile for nearly 15 years and recently he’s begun to install the company’s Madera tile, which is designed to replicate the rustic texture and appearance of wood shakes, as an alternative to cedar shakes.
To emphasize the cedar-shake appearance, Madera tile is slightly shorter in length than most of Monier’s other concrete tile products—about 13 inches versus 17 inches, Hannigan says—and there are 20 more tiles per square in a package than other concrete tiles. Madera roof tiles have a Class A fire rating and come in four natural-wood colors. Hannigan has also recently installed a Cutler-Hammer 25kW standby generator from Eaton Electrical to run a 7,000-square-foot home in the event of a power outage. The Cutler-Hammer brand offers a variety of whole-house generators ranging from 7 to 75 kW. The liquid-cooled propane- or natural gas-fueled 25kW model starts itself immediately when it senses an outage, switching automatically to stand-by power. A user-friendly control panel, an hour meter to log run time and keep track of service intervals, and a status indicator light are other features.
