CALIFORNIA—LOS ANGELES in particular—has a rich history of modern architecture. Names such as Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, and Joseph Eichler evoke distinctive feelings for the contemporary minded. This 13,000-square-foot custom home seeks to carry on that tradition.
Nature played an important role in the design of this home, found on a tree-filled, four-acre site in a prestigious residential community. In fact, Landry Design Group says, the size of the trees dictated the orientation and layout of the building.
The architects exploited the beautiful landscape by designing the house with large commercial-style glass openings that bring the outdoors in. The windows, coupled with soaring ceilings, result in spacious interiors that are ideal for displaying the homeowner’s art collection. Despite its contemporary bias, the house’s interiors are warmed by generous amounts of wood and beige-colored stone. On the exteriors, a palette of smooth, hand-troweled stucco and Pennsylvania blue stone complement each other and blend with the textures and colors of the surrounding landscape.
