By BUILDER Magazine Staff. The Central Texas division of Ryland Homes won the 2003 EVHA (EnergyValue Housing Award) Builder of the Year at January’s International Builders’ Show.
The Austin, Texas-based Ryland division was the top winner among EVHA gold winners that included Pardee Homes of San Diego; Pruett Builders of Sarasota, Fla.; and Stitt Energy Systems of Rogers, Ark.
Ryland’s Central Texas division builds 1,000 homes each year. It won for its 3,154-square-foot home near San Antonio built for $37 per square foot, excluding land. Through a partnership with Masco’s Environments for Living program, Ryland offers a two-year guarantee that home heating and cooling will require less than 274 therms and 4,719 kWh per year, for an estimated average monthly cost of $54.
Winning energy features include R-20 blown-in cellulose walls, low-E windows with low solar heat gain properties, radiant barrier roof decking, ducts sealed with mastic and completely contained in conditioned space, a HCFC refrigerant-free air conditioner, and a direct-vent, condensing furnace (92 AFUE).
