Easy Being Green

Energy-efficient construction works.

The Department of Energy and the Green Building Council have found that energy-efficient construction (compliant with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Energy Star standards) results in energy savings of up to 50 percent a year. Residential builders, the groups say, can earn their payback within five years. LEED certified buildings also result in lower operating costs, higher asset values, and better indoor air quality. The findings could prompt more states to add green building programs, the groups say.
