What do you do for a living? Seriously, think about your answer.
If building custom homes seemed like the obvious reply, your perception of your role is too narrow. Of course you know how to assemble a house, how to work with trades, and how to manage clients. But what you actually do every day encompasses so much more than that. You lead your office and jobsite teams; develop ways to market and sell your services; weigh new opportunities; decide how to allocate your resources; size up potential clients, employees, and vendors; and plan your company’s future.
In many ways, the work you perform for your company is the same that executives of big, privately held companies do for theirs. Your job is to run a profitable business, and a pretty complex one at that. That’s a job a few of you have formally prepared for and many more of you have had to pick up as you became more accomplished at building.
There are a number of educational events that are designed to help you become a better custom builder, and I totally support them and encourage you to attend them. But until now there have been no events that focus on helping custom builders to become better businessmen and women. CUSTOM HOME is closing that gap with our first in-person event, Directions 2007, a conference designed for the executives of custom building businesses.
With help and input from builder members of Custom Builders-USA, we’ve developed an exciting, challenging program that will give you a new way to look at the role you play in your company and a framework for gauging your performance. We’ve planned a day and a half packed full of intense sessions by some of the country’s most dynamic and prestigious speakers. They will give you new perspectives on your business and your role in it, a look at outside forces that are impacting custom building, and insights into how to hone the skills you need as a leader and decision maker. You’ll also get a chance to rub elbows and exchange ideas with some of your most successful peers.
Directions 2007 will be held June 19 and 20 at the Four Seasons Aviara in Carlsbad, Calif. I invite you to attend this executive-level conference planned exclusively for custom builders. It will give you a new way to look at what you do for a living.
