Custom Renovation / Merit Award

The transformation of a sweet, single-story bungalow into this deceptively spacious home didn’t exactly require magic. But architect Charles Moore definitely dipped into his bag of architectural tricks to preserve the character of his own home.

What’s not at all evident from the street is that the 1,000-square-foot bungalow was nearly quintupled to 4,700 square feet. Moore accomplished this sleight of hand by “driving the roof down into the new second floor” on the front elevation. The roof bears on 6-foot knee walls and rises to a 9-foot peak. It’s punctuated with two shed-roof dormers that maintain a low profile while deferring to the gabled entry porch. “You get the benefit of two full floors,” Moore explains, “but the house doesn’t look as tall as a full two-story house.”

Three new second-floor bedrooms top the original house and are joined to a three-story addition that extends the original footprint into the rear yard. Moore bumped out the old galley kitchen and added a breakfast room, family room, and porch on the first floor, with a big master suite above. One of the original bedrooms became the new central stairwell. It links up with steel stairs that lead to Moore’s office, which sits within the new third-floor monitor that sheds light down the stairwell and into the center of the house. The renovated house has 65 windows in all. Moore used them to mitigate the addition’s mass and to capture light for the new interiors.
