Mixed Media Brad Teasdale’s mosaic work has evolved over the years from assembling mosaic tile into traditional Romanesque styles to using modern techniques blending concrete, glass, wood, and metal in clean and nearly seamless designs. Contemporary work requires the same attention to detail as traditional mosaic work, he says; it simply translates classic themes with modern materials.

When he did traditional mosaic work, Teasdale strived to make it crisp and clean to respond to modern design, and now with concrete as his primary media he achieves that goal.

Teasdale can create decorative and structural pieces including backsplashes, murals, countertops, floors, walls, or room screens and dividers. Because he works with materials that transmit and reflect light, he prefers to visit the client’s project to understand how the light interacts with the space and how it will shape the design of his mosaic. Bejeweled & Bedazzled When it comes to incorporating natural elements into durable, beautiful surfaces and wallcoverings, Maya Romanoff’s creative team is open to anything. Really. Paper and polymer films mostly are just backing materials for an array of unusual and imaginative surfaces that include shells, mother of pearl, shaved mica, glass beads, sand, metal, fabric, and wood veneer. “We really like working with natural materials and things that human beings naturally gravitate toward,” says vice president of sales and marketing Laura Romanoff. The firm’s artisans craft these materials into dazzling wall finishes in styles that run the gamut from modern to traditional to exotic.

Backing materials and surfacing formats—rolls, sheets, or tiles—depend on the decorative material’s properties. Many designs are flexible enough to be applied over corners and around columns.

The firm also offers custom services. Says Romanoff, “We really like working with designers and sometimes end users to make sure that we help them create exactly the effect that they’re looking for.” One of the newest designs is paperbacked TrueMetal tile, made from patinated aluminum, copper, or brass leaf in basketweave and coffered patterns, shown here.
