This bucolic hunt-country hilltop was made for a telescoping house. The linear home sits on a ridge overlooking a valley, its sprawling layout drinking in views of the Virginia Piedmont and equestrian trails crossing the owners’ land. “The intent was to make it look like an old farmhouse with a series of additions,” says Barnes Vanze Architects principal Stephen Vanze, though the telescoping was driven by a decidedly modern program.
Dining, living, and family rooms are housed in the brick section, with the clapboard appendages—a master suite and the kitchen/pantry/mud-room—at opposite ends of the house. A long pergola links the kitchen and outdoor dining area to the swimming pool and guesthouse, whose board-and-batten siding recalls vernacular outbuildings—“a less expensive, more informal way to go,” notes project architect Tim Clites.
One judge deemed the project “a nice transformation of type into something new.”
