Coastal Community Maximizes Outdoor Living in Charleston

The Kiawah River master plan will feature mixed-use amenities and 1,000 acres of waterfront green space.

The Beach Company, a local Charleston, S.C.-area developer, has announced plans for Kiawah River, a “sea island” village just 15 miles from the Charleston peninsula.

The community, which sits along 20 miles of waterfront and oak groves in the Charleston sea islands, puts a focus on coastal living. Only half of the property’s 2,000 acres will be developed, with the remaining 1,000 acres existing as open space with a system of trails spanning over 15 miles.

Smaller distinct neighborhoods will be designed throughout the community, connected by the trails. Future residents will be able to purchase single family homes designed as cottages and villas. The number of homes for sale is not yet available.

The master plan will include a riverfront restaurant, outdoor outfitter and fishing camp, events hall, chapel, community farm, neighborhood shops and a boutique hotel.

The Beach Company brought together a carefully selected team of designers to focus on preserving the traditional Lowcountry architectural aesthetic of the area, including Glenn Keyes, Beau Clowney and Kate Campbell, Andrew Cogar and Ryan Yurcaba of Historical Concepts who will design many of the residential homes at Kiawah River, Julia Sanford and Howard Backen and Luca Pignata.
