The main goal of this project was “to provide a striking yet functional destination space that looked good from the main house and pool and provided unobstructed views out towards the surrounding hills,” says architect Joseph Huettl. Indeed, the poolside structure enhances the feel of a newly renovated home, and as one judge gushed, “It looks great at night.”
The pavilion is a comfortable and functional outdoor living space that’s totally separate from the main house. A full contingent of amenities include bathroom/changing room, outdoor kitchen featuring built-in cooking, side grill, refrigerator, sink, and other appliances, as well as a flat screen T.V. Luxury details like the gas fire pit and spa as well as the wrapping water feature create a retreat-like atmosphere.
The extensive roof cantilever contributes to year-round use of the space, but proved to be a challenge. The team originally imagined a giant steel C shaped structure with the supports imbedded underground, Huettl explains. It was the engineer’s decision to lower a concrete footing with a bolted-on L-shaped structure then add hidden steel in the roof.
