FourPlans: Country Homes with One-Story Layouts

Ideal for aging in place, these designs provide traditional touches like big front porches.

2 MIN READ

Farmhouses and other country-inspired designs are all the rage right now, but the typical two-story layout that accompanies them won’t work for anyone hoping to age in place or simply get around easier. Enter these hybrids: generous porches and traditional design elements on the exteriors open up to modern open layouts with living space on one level.

Ultra-Spacious Snack Bar

This design blends the wrapping porch of a country farmhouse with a traditional brick-and-siding exterior. The great room shares its cathedral ceiling with an open kitchen. For more architectural interest, the octagonal dining room is complemented by a splendid tray ceiling. See more images, information, and the floor plans.

Red-Hot Farmhouse

This sleek farmhouse is a hot seller right now, thanks to its streamlined floor plan (2,077 square feet) on one level. The shed dormer echoes the shape of the box bay, with the suggested dark window frames feeling perfectly current. Inside, each bedroom includes a walk-in closet and the main living areas flow into each other (and outside). See more images, information, and the floor plans.

Flexible Study/Bedroom 4

Triple dormers add classic curb appeal to this home, along with large windows and a generous porch. Inside, the fourth bedroom can become a study if needed, with an entrance both to the foyer and the hallway where the other secondary bedrooms are located. The kitchen makes it easy to socialize with the sink located on the island, so owners can rinse and chop ingredients while carrying on a conversation with visitors. Relax on the Porch

Late summer evenings call out for porch time, and this home delivers lots of space for outdoor living. Owners can host fun casual meals at the kitchen’s snack bar, which fits five people, or take the party over to the elegant dining room. The great room and the breakfast area both open to the back porch. Buyers will love their large walk-in closet and private bath (complete with two sinks) on the right side of the home.
