The focus of this 15-foot-by-13-foot dressing room is a center island with drawer storage and a hidden hamper. “The island is a great tool for laying out ensembles or packing for trips,” says architect Jay Gleysteen. Floor-to-ceiling natural maple cabinets augment island storage with hanging rods and pull-out shelves. Deep drawers beneath two window seats accommodate unwieldy items, while the seats themselves are ideal for putting on shoes. Low-pile carpeting is low maintenance and feels great on bare feet. Gleysteen says the custom cabinets were stopped short of the ceiling in order to use stock sizes, which kept costs in check, but he also feels that it adds drama to the space.
