THIS L.A. HOME BRINGS together two popular California traditions—modern architecture and outdoor living—in a serene union. Located in an established community, the one-acre lot had mature trees the owners wanted to keep and an existing house they did not. William Hefner Architecture and Interiors razed the home and started fresh.
The new house is organized around three large tree groupings to draw the exterior inside. Making the most of its secluded location, the home’s outdoor spaces—patios, balconies, and courtyards—are separated from the interior by large expanses of glass to bring in light. Communal areas designed for both intimate occasions and large gatherings are organized for maximum flexibility. The living room and dining room, for example, open out to a courtyard, which can also be used for entertaining.
The spacious 8,000-square-foot home has a decidedly Japanese influence with low horizontal planes and a natural palette that creates an interplay of textures. The structural metal framing is left exposed while trowel stucco and stained cedar siding add warmth. On the interior, cedar, colored concrete, walnut, stainless steel, natural stone, and stained white oak provide a rich but muted feel.
