Designed for a growing family with a passion for nature and Japanese design, this Portland, Ore.–based custom home called Glass Link was recognized as a grand winner in the “Best Custom Home 6,000 to 8,000 Square Feet” category at the 2020 Gold Nugget Awards.

The 7,800-square-foot, U-shaped home—designed by local architecture firm Scott | Edwards Architecture and built by Otis Construction—is tucked into the gentle slope of its site and is carefully positioned to allow the central great room and exterior courtyard to be open and airy, but also establish separation between the active and private areas of the home.

After descending the stairs on the active wing, the owners are greeted with a private wine room with a glass-door entry and a hidden whiskey room off to the left. The quaint space features a small bar with seating for three, wood flooring and a display case, and modern lighting elements. Plus, a discrete garden cut from the natural hillside and supported by a 12-foot retaining wall allows the homeowners to host private gatherings adjacent to the unique room as well.
