The Greenbuild KB Home ProjeKt had vision. It was a true exploration of how to bring sustainability to the masses. From original project scope, the objective of the partners was sustainability. And, when the project was live on the show floor at the Greenbuild Conference and Exhibition, it embodied the next frontier of sustainability.
John McManus, editorial director, residential group at Hanley Wood, captured insights from how KB Home was able to deliver a home product to comply with California’s anticipated net zero energy requirements in 2020.
In this video, McManus outlines the three-tiered approach that it took to accomplish the group’s goals.
First, close collaboration with suppliers enabled the team to make sustainable solutions scalable for the average buyer. This project in particular took a deep dive into modular construction and how it can contribute to efficiencies and lower costs. (More on this from the designer’s point of view also is available here.)
Second, through strategic collaboration meetings, KB Home was able to align interests with suppliers much earlier in the pipeline. Working lock-step with the suppliers gave them visibility of the project’s goals and objectives that led to enhanced understanding, more efficiencies, and, sometimes, even product enhancements.
Third, there was a focus on the introduction of materials that are easier to assemble on site and integrate into the building envelope. This also created efficiencies in scheduling and resources, which contribute to a streamlined construction phase.
