The third public comment period opens March 1 for 20 days of input from green building pros on improvements and updates to the USGBC’s LEED rating system. LEED is going global in 2012 and those in the green design and building industry are invited to make comments or suggest changes to this third draft of LEED 2012. The revisions include new language, requirements, and flexible applications for international projects. Existing credit requirements also were altered to be more in line with standard construction and architecture documentation in hopes of making the system easier to implement. Another major change to the program will be new procedures for continued monitoring of building performance and the option to enhance it even after the building is completed. “LEED 2012 is the next step towards a global, performance-based application,” says Scot Horst, senior vice president of LEED, USGBC, in a press release issued earlier this week. “In LEED 2012, a project’s engagement with LEED will represent an ongoing commitment that is supported by a suite of performance management tools.”
Following the open comment period, USGBC members can vote on the revisions before the final version of LEED 2012 is launched, which will happen in November.
