The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has released the third quarter results of their Home Design Trends Survey, which highlights the prominence of emerging home features throughout the third quarter of 2015. The AIA’s most recent report finds that as the nation’s expanding metro areas continue to grow, homeowners are increasingly favoring amenities and features that offer residents a sense of community.
Community design elements that link residents to other people and commerce, such as access to public transportation, multi-generational housing, more walkable neighborhoods, and mixed-use facilities are all on the rise.
“There has been a pronounced shift in driving habits over the last few years, with increasing numbers of people being far more interested walking and utilizing public transit options,” AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA, said in a release. “With that is a desire for proximity to employment and commercial activities.”

In residential design, contemporary-style homes are growing in popularity, charting a seven point increase this year with 45% compared to 38% last year. While homeowners are adopting a more upscale aesthetic, keeping the structure low-maintenance remains an important factor when choosing exterior materials. More favored trends include single-story layouts, adding front or side porches, and smaller, more simple spaces that emphasize styling.

Baker noted, “Business conditions in most residential construction segments and regions are looking very strong, with the exception of the investment-oriented second and vacation home market. The jump in demand among first-time buyers, coupled with a surge in the move-up market is an especially promising indication for the overall housing market.”
