I was happy to see that AIA’s Northwest & Pacific Region Chapter selected Thomas Bosworth, FAIA, of Bosworth Hoedemaker, as its 2012 Medal of Honor Award winner. Back in 2004 I wrote about Bosworth’s own house as part of a larger story on remodeling classic American house types.
My co-workers and I couldn’t get over how appealing his renovated Seattle bungalow was. (Clickherefor more photos.) Even today, it’s still one of my favorite houses that I’ve covered. Its front porch, open kitchen shelves lined with pottery, and row of French doors opening onto a snug back patio lend it a convivial air. I can imagine living there myself.
The Medal of Honor’s purpose is “to select and recognize an individual member of the AIA Northwest and Pacific Region who has consistently demonstrated excellence in design, the practice of architecture, architectural education, or service to the profession, which has promoted public understanding of architects and architecture, and who has made notable contributions to the AIA NW&PR Region,” according to AIA NW&PR. The jury this year was chaired by Donald Stasny, FAIA, and included Bob Frasca, FAIA, of Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects; Joe Mayo, Assoc. AIA, Mahlum; Christine Bruckner, FAIA, CEBruckner Architect; and William Bain, FAIA, NBBJ.
