Japan’s largest home building enterprise, Sekisui House, made a splash in the U.S. earlier this year when it acquired Woodside Homes for roughly $468 million. Sekisui House, led by Isami Wada, launched North American Sekisui House in 2010. In Japan, Sekisui House has been working to develop and popularize eco-friendly housing systems by supplying its mainstay product, Zero Energy Houses (ZEH). As in Japan, the company says, interest in and support for sustainable living environments is expanding in the U.S., as evidenced by California’s new regulation that requires all newly built detached houses to be ZEH by 2020. For Wada, the Woodside acquisition made sense because the two companies shared “the same philosophy of creating environmentally sound communities and fulfilling the housing industry’s responsibility to future generations.”
