Leveraging Supplier Partnerships

Prepping projects and solving problems can be easier with trusted partners than going it alone.

When feeling pressured to complete a project on a tight time frame, it’s tempting to think we need figure out all of the details on our own. And no matter how much preparation has gone into a project, unforeseen challenges and complications always arise. At any stage of a project, even when it feels like your back is against the wall, one of the best things you can do is lean on your suppliers for support.

In addition to providing your team with materials, suppliers have a responsibility to share best practices to help with product selection, adherence to building codes, installation, maintenance and more. While prepping for and working on a project, you have access to a wealth of resources, including:

• Source Books + Product Guides: These printed and/or digital resources provide you with key product details to assist with everything from inspiration to specification.

• FAQs: Typically written for both consumers and pros, an FAQ includes information about everything from product composition and customization to installation, care and maintenance.

• Continuing Education: Topics range from conceptual to tactical, and many CE resources will offer an option to pursue course credit through one or more professional associations.

• Building Codes: Regardless of what material they are supplying, most manufacturers will provide clear guidance on what it takes to adhere to building code requirements.

• Warranties: Along with providing clear information about the terms and conditions of a product warranty, most suppliers will include insights into key building code details and other legal precedents that may be worth studying.

As our industry becomes increasingly digital-first, online content libraries will continue to provide ready insights for anyone to access at any time of day. This puts the power in your hands and can minimize the amount of time you spend looking for answers to time-sensitive questions.

Third-Party Certification

Some suppliers also offer training programs to help educate installers on proper techniques. One of the most recent developments within the manufactured stone veneer industry, for example, is the establishment of a third-party certification program for installers. The MSV Certified Installer Program is delivered by certified trainers and teaches the fundamentals of MSV installation and best practices. The course is comprised of classroom training and involves both a 50-question classroom test and a performance test.

By the end of the program, everyone who passes will receive an official certificate from the Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association (CMHA). The certification is good for three years and yields an added business incentive: all MSV Certified Installers are listed on the CMHA website, as well as on websites such as ElevateWithStone.com, CulturedStone.com and EldoradoStone.com after you complete the course through a session hosted by their team.

You can learn more about the Certified Installer Program, including course modules and upcoming sessions, at https://elevatewithstone.com/certification/.

Learning On Demand

In addition to written resources such as those listed above, many manufacturers also provide access to video resources that cover a range of tips, topics and case studies. For example, Westlake Royal Stone Solutions has produced a “Technically Speaking” video series that breaks down individual topics related to installing manufactured stone veneer into short segments that vary in length from one to six minutes. These brief videos allow you to jump to the specific topic you have in mind, for quick and easy access.

Of course, it’s up to you to take advantage of your suppliers’ support resources. By actively engaging with your suppliers and embracing those partnerships, you’ll be able to accelerate your personal growth and progress while contributing to the advancement of the industry as a whole.
