Nantucket Barn Renovation, Nantucket, Mass.
It’s not often you see a renovation and reduction (as opposed to an addition), but Treacy & Eagleburger Architects saw fit to trim the square footage of this barn by a third when converting it to a guesthouse. The resulting 2,700-square-foot structure is more appropriately scaled in relation to the main residence that sits directly across from it on a pastoral site overlooking Folger’s Marsh on the island of Nantucket. Together, the two buildings form a “working yard” between them.

Although the barn was retired from agricultural use long ago (it was more recently used as an eight-car garage, topped by an apartment and storage space), the architects worked with builder Steve Lindsay to retain its agrarian character. Authentic elements include heavy timber roof ties, cathedral ceilings, a cupola skylight, and a fully functioning hoist with hayloft doors.
