Charlotte Consolidation

Move puts two top-10 area builders in business together.

By Jill Ralph. A year ago, Beazer Homes USA and Crossmann Communities announced their plans to merge their national home building companies. Now, Beazer (fifth largest builder in Charlotte) and Crossmann (third largest builder in Charlotte) are combining their Charlotte, N.C., operations. In the summer of 2002, the $603 million merger closed with Beazer absorbing Crossmann Communities; the two companies operated as separate entities. Now, they will consolidate, resulting in shared back-office operations. Beazer plans to bring Crossmann Communities staff members into its Charlotte offices.

Both companies build in a similar price range in Charlotte: Beazer’s average price: $131,000; Crossmann’s average price: $126,000. Combined, the two companies delivered 1,100 homes and created revenue of $140 million in fiscal 2002.

Scott Thorson, Beazer’s regional president for the south Atlantic, anticipates “… a minimum of 5 percent savings (from the consolidation).” Thorson will not rule out the possibility that the two brands may merge in the future.
