A lot can happen in 6 years. Since Tuns Press first released a monograph on Rockhill and Associates in 2005, the award-winning Lawrence, Kansas, firm has designed many new projects, including its first affordable housing development. Along the way, principal Dan Rockhill and his staff have deepened their explorations of green building techniques, while at the same time honing their industrial-modern aesthetic. Accordingly, the same publisher released a second edition of Designing & Building: Rockhill and Associates ($29.50) in May 2011. The updated book includes several projects that didn’t appear in the original, as well as a new coda to Juhani Pallasmaa’s original essay on Rockhill’s architecture. Pallasmaa writes, “The relentlessness, edgyness [sic], and challenging passion of his earlier work is turning into considerate and balanced projects with a strengthened sensuality and sense of the core values of the modernist tradition.”Some of the projects shown that highlight this evolution are Lolomas, a 55-unit affordable housing community in Clovis, N.M. (2009); Van Go Mobile Arts, a facility for a nonprofit organization in Lawrence (2009); and a custom home called Screen House, also in Lawrence (2008).
