A Maryland-based interior design and merchandising firm has introduced a new program for builders looking to enhance their model homes without breaking the bank.

Builders Design’s new CORE program offers full-home staging starting at $20 a square foot, well under the average price for traditional merchandising. CEO Joe Duffus says the program is selling well with the company’s clients who are looking for a value-driven option to beautifying their model homes. Here, BUILDER talks with Duffus about the reasons why the program is so popular.

Model home merchandising can be expensive. Do some builders cut corners?
Some do, especially in a heated market. Those cuts are typically in eliminating window or trim treatments, vignetting, or reducing budgets to the point that it’s difficult to pull off a complete and cohesive look. Others recognize the power that a properly merchandised model can offer through greater absorption rates and increased time of sale, not to mention a positive reflection on the builder’s brand.

How is your new CORE program different?
Our CORE program was created to give the builder with limited available funds or budget constraints the ability to compete more effectively by offering a complete and cohesive model for around $20 a square foot.

It’s a turnkey approach to model home merchandising that includes all design, procurement, installation, furniture , accessories, artwork, and window treatments.

How has it been received?
Extremely well particularly in Texas, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. It’s aso starting to gain traction in more entry level markets.

What are the three biggest trends you’re seeing right now in model homes?
–Connectivity and technology
–Enhancing and differentiating curb appeal
–Seamless living between inside and outside
