Shrinking Suburbia

By BIG BUILDER Magazine Staff

Suburbia isn’t swelling as it has in the past, according to the Brookings Institution and the University of Virginia. While suburbs grew from 1990 to 2000, population growth was uneven: 37 percent of 2,586 suburbs in the 35 largest metro areas lost population or remained stable. Small suburbs suffered: nearly one-third of those with fewer than 10,000 people lost population in the ’90s.
