Worker Crackdown

1 MIN READ

Builders who knowingly hire illegal aliens would have faced losing their state license and local permits under a bill presented in the Louisiana State Senate this session. SB 771 required contractors and trade builders to file an affidavit stating that immigrants they hired had been cleared by the federal government to work in the United States. Those found in violation would be subject to suspension or revocation of their license. The bill passed the Senate, with an amendment exempting businesses with no more than 10 workers. The bill then was referred to the House Committee on Labor and Industrial Relations; the committee adjourned its final meeting of the session without considering the bill.
