Livability’s “Top 100 Best Places to Live” analyzes data of more than 1,700 U.S. cities in eight categories: amenities, demographics, economy, education, health care, housing, infrastructure, and social and civic capital. Each city’s score in the eight categories is factored into their “LivScore” which determines the overall ranking of each city.

BUILDER decided to expand on this list by filtering the data by housing score, and adding additional market insight from Trulia and the U.S. Census Bureau. From Livability’s top 5 housing cities, we’ve re-ordered the cities by highest average listing price for 3-bedroom single-family homes (we were were unable to gather data on the median sale price of 3-bedroom homes for each metro, but listing price will still give you a rough idea of home value) compared to the 2012 median salary for the state from the U.S. Census American Community Survey.
