Too Much Framing
The benefits of advanced framing techniques are well known but they aren’t being put into practice very often, says Armstrong. The problem with conventional framing is that it can leave voids and small cavities at wall intersections and corners that can be difficult to insulate and seal effectively. By installing fewer framing members, it is easier for a builder or his sub to apply complete insulation coverage and achieve a tighter building envelope.

In fact, advanced framing produces energy efficient, structurally sound homes with lower material and labor costs than conventionally framed houses. And it provides a cost-effective method for meeting energy code requirements. By maximizing space for cavity insulation and minimizing the potential for insulation voids, advanced framing–also known as optimal value engineering–delivers significant energy performance for the buyer and cost savings for the builder.

Smarter framing strategies, including moving to 24-in. o.c., can save $1,000 in lumber on a 2,400-square-foot house according to the National Renewable Energy Lab and add 10% to the amount of wall that can be insulated. Framing contractors should like it because walls are faster to frame, weigh less when you have to stand them up, and it is easier to walk between the studs when wearing nail bags.

In addition, advanced framing simplifies the installation of insulation and air sealing. This document from APA-The Engineered Wood Association provides all the details.
