A Syracuse, N.Y., “deconstructed” duplex is taking an innovative approach to green building education.
Miller Homes, in collaboration with Dow Building Solutions and CDH Energy, built the energy-efficient home to educate the public and pros alike on the importance of high-performance products and technologies. The Energy Star-rated duplex is divided into two parts: Half of it is finished and serves as a model home; the other half showcases structural components and building envelope technologies through the use of open framing and roughed-in electrical, heating, insulation, and air-sealing systems.
Miller Homes used a variety of insulation and air sealing materials from Dow Building Solutions, including Styrofoam Tongue and Groove insulation and XPS foam insulation; Weathermate Flashing, Sill Pan, and Construction Tape: and Great Stuff Pro window and door insulating foam sealant.
The project was toured by 22,000 visitors during a parade of homes last fall and will stay open over the next four years to serve as an educational and training facility for builders, contractors, architects, students, and the public.
