Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley is calling for building code changes that will require 10 percent of single-family homes and townhouses to be made livable for people in wheelchairs and 10 percent more to be built with wider doorways and wider staircases, in addition to other changes. Officials say the changes are expected to add no more than one half of 1 percent to the cost of a large residential project. If the plan is approved, Chicago would be one of the first cities in the nation to use its building code to expand housing options for people with disabilities.
