Project description form the entry: The owners wanted a very modern house, they also desired for warm materials that would reinforce the villages 350 year history. Materials used are sensitive to the historic character of the area while looking thoroughly modern at the same time. Stone was used in this project as a symbol of strength, privacy, and protection.

2011 Masonry Construction Fireplaces Winner and Readers’ Choice Award Rudd Residence Fireplace, Tomah, Wisc. Architect/Designer: Daniel Peltier, Design Masonry; Masonry Contractor: Daniel Peltier, Design Masonry; Masonry Supplier: Tony Kavanagh, Glacier Stone Supply. Project description form the entry: The design takes into consideration the size of the room, the arches throughout the house, and the owners’ request for a fireplace that was not like other fireplaces. The stone was chosen to compliment the knotty walnut floor, the alder wood trim, and the view of the cranberry marshes that the room overlooks.
Projects built using a significant amount of masonry products and techniques are eligible for the 2012 Project of the Year Awards program from Masonry Construction, Custom Home’s sister publication. Building types accepted include houses, fireplaces, historic renovation, and landscaping. Judging is based on building skill and innovations, environmental considerations, and cost-saving methods. Projects can be located anywhere in the world but must have been completed after Jan. 1, 2009.
