Roofing and waterproofing manufacturer GAF has committed $1 million in total assistance in support of recovery efforts for communities in the Carolinas affected by Hurricane Florence. The manufacturer has committed to providing enough shingles to re-roof more than 200 homes in the most vulnerable communities affected by the hurricane. This includes an initial donation of over 300,000 square feet of shingles to Good360, a product philanthropy agency, which will manage the gift’s distribution to local recovery agencies.
GAF’s efforts are focused on Burgaw, N.C., a town of approximately 4,000 people where it operates a manufacturing plant and employs 224 people. The town was severely affected by Hurricane Florence.
“After two weeks of devastating floods, the full impact of Hurricane Florence is just now starting to be known,” said Jim Schnepper, president, GAF. “In Burgaw and throughout the Carolinas, many have still not been able to return to their homes, and some never will due to the massive destruction left in Hurricane Florence’s wake. That is why our focus is on providing sustained support – so that we can help our employees and the Burgaw community rebound and, ultimately, rebuild stronger than ever.”
GAF has also made financial contributions to relief service nonprofits providing food, shelter, and other services in the Burgaw community, as well as direct aid to GAF employees and their families. A newly-established employee relief fund will provide further financial assistance to those who are experiencing hardship as a result of Hurricane Florence.
