The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) recently awarded 23 graduate students from across the country with scholarships—worth $10,000 each. ASHRAE’s Graduate Student Grant-In-Aid award program presents money to full-time students who are conducting research that will boost sustainability in HVAC and refrigeration technology. Applicants must submit detailed presentations outlining their plans for innovative product enhancements or systems, as well as how they plan to demonstrate the effectiveness of their proposals. Some of the topics that 2012 grant recipients will investigate include hybrid geothermal systems designed for agricultural applications, glazing with integrated shading, waste heat recovery, rapid airflow modeling for advanced ventilation systems, bio-fueled heat pumps, and oxidation air cleaners to create ventilation systems immune to chemical attack.Applications for next year’s grants are due by Dec. 15 and awardees will be announced in April 2013.
