This 10-week course for residential designers, builders, and engineers covers in-depth details on how and why to design or build a zero net energy house. Part of the Building Energy Masters Series from the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association, the online format offers participants a self-paced but immersive experience with an expert instructor. The curriculum and materials were created by Marc Rosenbaum, director of engineering for Martha’s Vineyard-based sustainable design/build firm South Mountain Company. Rosenbaum has been teaching, lecturing, presenting, and using sustainable design principles for more than a decade and is a Certified Passive House Consultant, a LEED Accredited Professional, a licensed engineer, and an MIT graduate.All materials will be available on the first day of the course and attendees can proceed through the sessions on their own time. Rosenbaum will be available for guidance and questions during the scheduled course dates from Oct. 1 through Dec. 7. Some of the topics to be covered include what is a zero net energy house, how much energy do houses use, heat transfer in houses, moisture and vapor flow, the building envelope, sustainable systems, and energy modeling. In addition, attendees will be given resources for continued research and learning about net-zero design and building.
