Housing has a lot of challenges to overcome to start embracing change. Some of those challenges are tangible and can be easily transformed with new processes, however, others are more culturally ingrained and will need a new mindset to overcome.
During an onstage interview at the HIVE conference, Sheryl Palmer, chairman and CEO at Taylor Morrison, spoke to disruption legend Steve Case, chairman and CEO at Revolution LLC and co-founder of America Online, and author of the book The Third Wave.
“Steve’s thoughts on creating more opportunity for innovation validated something I’ve always known to be true: The home building industry is desperate for disruption,” Palmer says after her interview with Case. “As an industry we are still in the early days of innovation, but when you couple that with the labor shortage we’re experiencing, there is nothing but opportunity that lies ahead. We have the power to shape the future of housing—from the way we communicate with homeowners and market ourselves, to the way we work with our trade partners and build homes. Steve challenges every company and every one to open themselves up to new ways of thinking, and when you do, it’s enlightening.”
The interview is available here to view and captures Case’s ability to reframe a situation, to take a step back and deconstruct what is happening in order to disrupt it with a new approach.
Yet, none of this will be possible in a vacuum. As Palmer points out, partnerships in housing are difficult. She shares a proverb that Case refers to in his book: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
With a bit of trust and collaboration, housing can start engaging in the disruption that is long overdue. Save the date for the next HIVE experience, Nov. 28 to 29, 2018.
