Guys need their own space, too—whether that getaway spot is used for woodworking, macramé, late night fantasy football trades on the waiver wire, or having friends over to watch “Tommy Boy” for the 23rd time in surround sound.
In a recent online survey of 500 men nationwide, half of respondents said it was “very important” to have a room of their own in the house. The study, conducted by Baltimore-based Imre Communications (which polled men between the ages of 21 and 65 with family incomes of at least $50,000), found that 67 percent of men retreat to their own personal zones for hobbies, while 37 percent escape to watch movies and sports.
Traditionally, man caves (a.k.a. “man holes”) have been relegated to the basement or garage, but some builders are looking to change that. Charter Homes, based in Lancaster, Pa., recently began offering an above-ground guys’ lair as a plan option in many of its new homes, complete with a mini-kitchen, bar, kegerator, and a designated niche for a plasma TV.
