The NAHB endorsed a total of 137 House and Senate candidates from across the country.
On Tuesday, 95% of those candidates were elected to office, with only six representatives and two senators losing their races.
In its 74-year history, the NAHB has never endorsed congressional candidates. This year, however, the housing association felt strongly compelled to ensure Congress kept the housing and economic recovery on track.
“This election could determine if the housing and economic recovery stays on track or veers off course,” NAHB chairman Ed Brady said in a statement in September. He noted Congress needed to reform and streamline the regulatory process, ensure that any tax reform efforts protect vital housing tax incentives, ease tight credit conditions for home buyers, and enact comprehensive housing finance reform.
With the solid success of the NAHB’s endorsed candidates, CEO Jerry Howard says he hopes the organization will endorse more candidates in the future, with a goal of endorsing one in every race. The NAHB also is looking forward to learning more about the president-elect’s approach to the housing recovery, says Howard.
“President-elect Trump placed a great deal of emphasis on deregulating business during the campaign. There’s certainly a lot of room for him to take action with respect to regulations that are placed on the home building sector, everything from environmental regulations to labor regulations to financial regulations. We’re hopeful that that will be addressed early. We look forward to working with the administration on GSE reform and tax reform,” he says.
