Decks That Stand Up to High Winds

With the right design and construction techniques, balconies and decks can weather the harshest coastal storms and flooding.

In coastal North Carolina, builders face a balancing act to build homes that are functional, beautiful, and tough. Homes located in this part of Hurricane Alley take a pounding from coastal storms, especially during hurricane season, which runs from June until October.

Local builders have learned how to design and construct decks, porches, and balconies that can withstand high winds and flooding. The trick is to build structures that not only look good and function well, but also can weather the occasional storm.
