4 Design Ideas from the Pros

A few ideas from this year's design panel at the International Builders' Show.

It’s no wonder that “60 Design Ideas in 60 Minutes” is one of the most popular and well-attended sessions at the NAHB International Builders’ Show. Architects, builders, and designers share ideas that can differentiate a home—as well as its builder—from the competition.

Today’s buyers are “looking for design that is well executed, adds convenience, and gives them an experience,” said the session’s moderator, Jamie Goldman of Denver-based design firm Kephart. Below are some key takeaways from the 2017 session:

  • Bigger is better when it comes to doorways, especially those that open to outside dining/entertaining areas. For homes with no patio, a rooftop deck can help maximize outdoor space.
  • Bathrooms should have spa-like details such as a glass-enclosed shower alongside a soaking tub, automated and customizable lighting, and elements of nature like indoor plants and stone or pebble accents.
  • Make the bedroom both functional and visually appealing. Installing wall art panels is one example of how to add elements of design; many wall panels can double as a soundproofing materials.
  • For tighter kitchen layouts, pull-out countertops stowed beneath the permanent countertops can increase usable space.
