Associated Builders and Contractors’ Florida East Coast Student chapter at Florida International University’s Moss School of Construction, Infrastructure and Sustainability has earned first place overall at the national Construction Management Competition.
A team of six FIU students participated under the direction of Dr. Ayman Morad, including Maria Rizek, Adam Quinones, Adays Leon, David Jervis, Anouk do Pico Sforza and Carol Brea. The team earned top marks from judges in the Estimating, Quality Control, and Project Management and Scheduling categories for an overall first-place finish.
At the CMC, teams of four university students are tasked with building out a professional-level project management proposal for a real-world project RFP to present to a panel of industry representatives. The task is designed to challenge the students’ construction knowledge, organizational and presentation skills, and time management. Sixteen teams from around the country participated in the competition’s preliminary round, and eight of those teams, including the team from FIU, competed for first place in the final round.
The project for this year’s Construction Management Competition was focused on the modernization of the Will Rogers Middle School building and campus in Long Beach, California. Teams were tasked with arranging the project’s abatement, demolition, roofing, finishes, specialties, related mechanical electrical plumbing and fire protection, building systems, earthwork, site utilities, hardscape and exterior improvements. They also had to ensure that the campus could remain open and accessible during construction.
“These students are the future of the construction industry,” says Peter Dyga, president and CEO of ABC’s Florida East Coast Chapter. “We’re proud of the work they’ve accomplished and the impact their teamwork and quick thinking had on not only the task at hand, but the community.”
