Designed as a primary residence for an octogenarian couple, the Butterfly House was conceived to support aging in place while embracing multigenerational living. Two angled wings pivoted around a central entry gallery promotes special clarity and separates private bedrooms from shared spaces. In addition to fostering privacy, this configuration also opens the home to sunset vistas and extends the living experience onto a covered porch, deck, and pool.

Durable metal cladding was used to create a fire-resistant, low-maintenance exterior while salvaged timber was milled and transformed into charred shou sugi ban siding. The reutilization of harvested timber was a nod to the owner, a retired forester.
Prefabricated volumetric modules were built offsite to ensure precision, reduce site disruption, and achieve energy efficiency. The modular construction also supports the clients’ goals of resilience, speed, and cost efficiency. Natural ventilation, high-performance glazing, and passive solar orientation work in harmony to reduce energy usage while expansive glass walls and outdoor living spaces offer immersive connections to nature.
