The clean-lined components of this kitchen great room look as if…
The judges praised the architectural consistency and sophistication of this project on Martha’s Vineyard, off the coast of Massachusetts. “The detailing is so spectacular,” said one. “The combination of roofs with flat planes of shingles is so nice.”
The roofs he’s referring to are bow roofs, similar in shape to an overturned sailboat hull. Architect Phil Regan chose them in part for the extra volume they allow, a crucial consideration due to local height restrictions. “Because of the vertical proportions, you can occupy the roof form,” he says. The bow roofs are known to withstand harsh weather well. And their boatlike shape invokes the nautical context of Martha’s Vineyard. Flat-roofed dormers supply a fresh twist on traditional eyebrow dormers. “We wanted the form to completely defer to the bow roof, so we kept the dormers flat,” Regan says.
Building on an existing footprint, Regan allotted the home’s program into three detached buildings—a main house, guesthouse, and garage. “The homeowners have adult kids and grandkids on the way,” he says. “They wanted privacy and zones for all the family members.” A timber frame shipped from upstate New York forms the structure of the great room, emphasizing the unusual curved ceiling volumes. Reddish brown window frames, their hue drawn from the color of nearby marsh grasses in autumn, enliven the subtle, natural color palette.
