Jim Johnson Studio 7
Gaut + Camarillo Residence
Inspired by the agrarian buildings of Sonoma County, Calif., Arkin Tilt Architects made this house narrow to permit maximum light penetration and sited it with a full southern exposure for passive solar gain. The simple structure is topped with an energy-efficient metal roof and features cellulose insulation, solar hot water, and Forest Stewardship Council–certified framing lumber. Salvaged flooring, in-floor radiant heat, and Energy Star appliances are among its other earth-friendly items.
