Urban Environment Design magazine’s international collegiate architectural design competition theme for 2012 is “Architecture in Transformation.” The Chinese publication focuses on the intersection of cities and the environment in architecture. This year’s competition adheres closely to these values, requesting submissions that address both the “relationship between architecture and city and the relationship between architecture and natural environment.” The selection committee will be looking for a design that uses environmentally friendly materials and concepts and that creates a grounded center for architecturally and socially fragmented areas in a city or village. The project should be a design for a “cultural complex” that takes into account special requirements of potential users, specific location, and the general theme of building for a transforming world in need of organic connections between people and places. First-, second-, and third-place winners each will receive a monetary award. The registration deadline is July 30 and completed submissions are due Oct. 8.
