Merit Award: The Lofts at Historic Albuquerque High School

Albuquerque, N.M.

1 MIN READ

Here’s a new spin on what to do with an outdated, abandoned high school. Turn it into live/work apartments. Architect Dale Dekker maintained most of the original interior dimensions and high ceilings in the new efficiency apartments, creating 69 lofts in two buildings, along with office space. One key to the project’s success: The city effectively donated the original buildings to the developer, allowing him to absorb the cost of restoration of the original school windows. All of the units sold before construction was completed.
