An adaptable floor plan design, prefabricated building components, and energy-efficient material selections helped this concept home in Nebraska achieve a LEED Silver rating. The architects started with an insulated concrete foundation and built the house with prefab walls and floor frames. Foam insulation, a tankless water heater, and a metal roof also contribute to energy ­efficiency. Other green decisions include mildew-fighting low-odor paint, wireless lighting control, and products that can be recycled at the end of their lives.
