Excellence Award Ruddell Family House, Single-Family Residential Architect: Moore Ruble Yudell Architects and Planners, Santa Monica, Calif.; Builder: Bittner Construction, Kauai, Hawaii Jury Comments: The organization of spaces is responsive to the microclimate of the Kauai site and to primary views in terms of creating closed and open spaces in the landscape. There is great spatial variety within the pavilions and in the covered lanai spaces between the pavilions.

Merit Award Kaimana – Hila, Historic Preservation Architect: Geoffrey Lewis Architect, Honolulu; Builder: Doug LeGrande, Honolulu Jury Comments: The architect took great care in retaining the charm and character of the historic Shingle style residence. The renovation/restoration is respectful and skillfully executed, with much attention to detail. The interior retains the aesthetic sensibility of the original house, yet is bright and livable for modern times, as exemplified by the new kitchen.

Unbuilt Award A’ama Nui, Single-Family Residence Architect: Robert Iopa, AIA, LEED AP, WCIT Architecture, Honolulu Jury Comments: The drawings and story were charming and almost distracting, because they were so well done. We like the modesty of the building and simplicity of the floor plan. The use of simple architectural elements is commendable. A wood slatted screen at the entry is reminiscent of local vernacular houses, providing privacy and encouraging light and breezes to enter. The drawings effectively communicate how well the spaces relate to the distant views.
