The Sycamores at Shady Canyon, Plan 3

Irvine, Calif.

BAASSENIAN/LAGONI’S DAVID M. Kosco says that “a courtyard always makes strong impression.” This certainly rings true in Plan 3 of The Sycamores at Shady Canyon. Inspired by authentic Spanish architecture, the courtyard comfortably allows for such traditional elements as a mosaic fountain and romantic balconies while also unifying this luxury, family move-up. “In the Southern California climate,” Kosco says, “a connection between interior and exterior is a viable amenity.”

With nearly every room in the 5,227-square-foot home benefiting from its proximity to the central courtyard, the project exemplifies a successful blend of tradition and innovation.

Kosco explains that the courtyard “activates the rest of the home while bringing natural light into the interior.” The spacing of the courtyard shaped the rest of the house plan, making it possible to include a separate casita as well as a four-car garage.
